Family-Friendly Car Games to Get You Through a Holiday Road Trip

‘Tis the season for holiday travel and while many people opt to fly, there are some of us who enjoy a good family road trip. Sometimes those trips can seem long especially if you have children who can get restless along the way. To keep you sane and to avoid hearing, “Are we there yet?” ten times over, we have compiled five games that you can play in the car that are not only family-friendly, but they will assist in passing the time away.

1) Punch Bug (Sometimes Referred to as Slug-a-Bug)

How to Play: Every time you see a VW Beetle, you yell "Punch Bug". You have to call out the color of the Volkswagen as well or else people will say it didn't count. For example, if you see a green VW Beetle, you yell, “Punch Bug Green,” for a point. The first to ten or the person with the most points upon arrival to destination wins.

2) Cows on My Side

How to Play: Yell, “Cows on my side,” when you see a cow on your side of the road. Every time you call a cow, you receive a point. If you see cow on the other side of the car, yell, “Cows on your side.” If you called them before the passengers on that side, you steal the point. Additional points are available if you ad rules, such as screaming, “Ghost Cow,” when passing a cemetery. The person with the most points upon arrival to destination wins.

3) License Plate Scavenger Hunt

How to Play: See/Write down as many states as possible. First person to call all 50 wins. Click here for a printable version of the list of US states.

4) Name those Headlights/Taillights

How to Play: Try and identify a car up ahead only by its headlights or taillights depending on what side of the road the other car is on. The first person to identify the car wins. Can be played day or night and is particularly useful in training yourself to spot cop cars from half a mile away.

5) The Classic Alphabet Game

How to Play: You have to spot the entire alphabet, in order, using signs that are outside the car. First to get to Z wins. An optional version is to start with the letter A and you try to spot a make or model that begins with it (ex. Acura), then you move on the next letter. (Bronco, Colorado, Dodge...Honda). Whoever gets to Z first, wins.

So whether you are in a Honda Odyssey, Pilot, HR-V or CR-V with your family, these game ideas are sure to keep your little ones entertained for hours on end. Another option is to utilize the Honda Readers Program, which is an app that features over 100 free audiobooks for children. More info on the program coming soon. In the meantime, safe travels and Happy New Year from the team at McDavid Honda of Frisco.
